Yeppoon 70.3 2013, Ironman Melbourne 2014
“After watching the last ‘Ironman’ cross the finishing line in Melbourne in 2013, I googled ‘train for an Ironman’. I had never done anything other than play footy and my longest run was a very slow half marathon a few years earlier. I didn’t own a bike and hadn’t swam consistently for 15 years. The common theme in all the advice and info was join a squad and get a coach. Being a shift worker with three kids time is at a premium and that’s where the relationship with CCTS and Jess was formed. After getting some initial advice and laying out a plan of attack, including lead up events, Jess was soon on my back with training plans all tweaked to maximise the benefit in the time I had. I even got in a few squad training sessions where everyone embraced each other in the common goal of competing in triathlons and mainly just having some fun. After identifying that completing a half Ironman as the best lead up to the full Ironman I entered into Yeppoon 70.3, and 3 months out Jess was making sure I had all my training set out in an easy to follow way. I had no experience whatsoever in HR monitors, VO2 max etc, but Jess was only an email or phone call away. Keeping her informed of my progress and having her see the improvements and receiving her enthusiastic and always encouraging support saw me finish yeppoon in a time a lot better than I was hoping. Although my formal training program finished here I continue to be a member and hope to get to more squad sessions this year.”
